Epsom Derby Festival: Godolphin's Global Charge for Racing Glory
Sports

The legendary Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England, prepares to host another thrilling chapter of racing history this weekend as the prestigious Epsom Derby Festival takes center stage. This iconic event, a jewel in British flat racing’s crown, unfolds over two spectacular days featuring two of the sport’s most coveted Group 1 contests—the Epsom Oaks on Friday and the world-famous Epsom Derby on Saturday.

As Godolphin, Dubai’s royal blue powerhouse, launches an ambitious worldwide campaign with nearly 40 runners competing across four continents, all eyes will be firmly fixed on Surrey’s sweeping Downs. The global racing giant also sets its sights on America’s premier tracks—Saratoga and Belmont Park—as it seeks to extend an already phenomenal 2026 season boasting 189 wins, 47 stakes victories and six Group 1 triumphs.

Friday’s spotlight falls on the Group 1 Epsom Oaks where unbeaten sensation Desert Flower attempts to join racing royalty by completing the rare 1000 Guineas-Oaks double last achieved by Godolphin legend Kazzia in 2002. Trainer Charlie Appleby remains cautiously optimistic about his star filly’s chances in her first attempt at the mile-and-a-half classic distance.

"Desert Flower has been flawless so far and arrives in perfect condition," said Appleby. "The distance remains our only question mark - we won't know if she truly stays until race day. But she's shown all the right signs and comes into this having won what we consider the best possible trial."

The daughter of Dubawi announced her classic credentials with a commanding front-running victory in Newmarket's 1000 Guineas last month, staying powering through the line to defeat Flight by a decisive length.

A Race Steeped in History

The Oaks traces its origins to Edward Smith-Stanley,12th Earl of Derby who founded both this race (1779) and its more famous counterpart (1780), naming them after his estate near Epsom. Friday's supporting feature is no less historic - The Coronation Cup was inaugurated in1902to honor King Edward VII's ascension following Queen Victoria's reign.
